A Minimally Invasive Solution for Acid Reflux
July 3, 2025

Georgetown Community Hospital offers cutting edge treatment for patients suffering from chronic acid reflux—also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The procedure, called Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF), provides long-lasting relief from GERD without the need for traditional surgery.
The TIF procedure is performed by Dr. Justin Case, a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist, who specializes in digestive and liver disorders. “For many patients, GERD is more than just heartburn—it’s a chronic condition that affects their quality of life every day,” said Dr. Case. “TIF allows us to treat the root cause of reflux with a less invasive approach that doesn’t involve any external incisions.”
Using the FDA-cleared EsophyX® device, the TIF procedure is performed through the mouth under anesthesia. It reconstructs the valve between the esophagus and stomach to prevent stomach acids from backing up, helping reduce or eliminate the need for daily reflux medications.
“Patients who have tried lifestyle changes and long-term use of proton pump inhibitors without relief may be excellent candidates for this procedure,” added Dr. Case. “It’s especially effective for those with mild to moderate GERD and small hiatal hernias.”
Unlike traditional anti-reflux surgery, TIF offers a faster recovery and fewer side effects. Most patients are able to go home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days. Dr. Case emphasized the importance of early evaluation for individuals experiencing persistent reflux symptoms, including heartburn, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing or chronic cough.
“GERD can worsen over time and lead to complications if left untreated,” he noted. “We’re proud to offer this innovative solution right here in Georgetown so patients don’t have to travel far for advanced digestive care.”
